String bet poker term

By , About.com Guide

Definition: You know in old cowboy movies when a player says "I call.... and I raise 500 dollars!" Well, in real life, that's called a string bet. Once a player says "I call" that is all you can do -- you can't add on a raise. You can't decide to raise more once you've already put out chips or declared a call. If you say "I raise 10" and then say "I mean 20" -- that's a string bet. You are only allowed to raise 10, because that's what you said. Likewise, if you say "I raise" but without a specific amount and put out an initial 10 chips, that's all you can raise -- you can't return to your stacks and get any more chips. That's a string bet as well.
