Definition: In Hold'em and Omaha, the dealer discards the top card on the deck, face down, before dealing out the three-card flop. This face-down card is called the "burn card." The dealer also "burns" a card before dealing the turn and river -- putting one card face down and the next one face up.
Examples:
After the players were finished betting, Manny said "Pot's right, burn it and turn it, dealer," and the dealer dealt one card face down and then dealt out the flop.
