Satellite

By Toby Bochan, About.com

Definition: A 'satellite' is a low buy-in poker tournament that awards the winner(s) an entry to a higher buy-in poker tournament. A satellite may consist of one table or many. If you wanted to hold a satellite event for a World Series of Poker main event seat, you could either hold a single-table 10-person satellite for $1000/each, or get 100 people to pony up $100 each. Both would yield a first prize of one $10,000 entry.

Greg Raymer and Chris Moneymaker both won their seats into the World Series of Poker through multi-table online satellite events at Pokerstars.
