Juan Carlos Mortensen was born in Ambato, Ecuador and moved to Spain at 15. He started playing poker in 1997 and four years later, won $1.5 million at the 2001 World Series of Poker Main event. That same year, he had already won the LA Poker Classic and the Shooting Stars Tournaments. In 2007, he won the Bellagio Five Star World Poker Tour Championship $25,000 buy-in event, becoming the first player to capture both titles.
