Greg Raymer was born in Lansing, Michigan in June of 1964. In 2004, he won the main event of the World Series of Poker, winning 5 million dollars, the most ever won in a tournament at that time. He lives in Stonnington, Connecticut with his wife, Cheryl, and their daughter.

Greg Raymer really got into poker when he moved to Connecticut in 1999 and was close to Foxwoods Resorts and its poker room.

Greg Raymer won his entry to the 2004 World Series of Poker Main Event through an online satellite at Pokerstars.com, making him the second WSOP winner in a row that came from satellites at Poker Stars. He paid $160 to enter the satellite that would lead him to the 5 million dollar prize.

Unlike his predecessor, Chris Moneymaker, however, Raymer had played in brick-and-mortar tournaments before and had won a seven-card stud tournament in 2001.
