The recent airing of the $50,000 buy-in H.O.R.S.E tournament was not the show I expected -- instead of feeling I could root for Scotty Nguyen to win (as I knew beforehand he did) I witnessed "the prince of poker" display less-than-princely behaviour and basically behave as a royal, drunken buffoon. One contributing factor had to be the numerous beers he was shown drinking during the final table. It raises a pretty important issue, especially if poker players ever want the game to be really seen as a sport. Should players be allowed to drink alcohol during tournaments?

It doesn’t strike me as being a particularly smart strategy to mix alcohol and poker anyway, given alcohol’s tendency to loosen up inhibitions. I’m sure a world-class player like Nguyen isn’t going to let it put him off his game but for a more average player, a few beers and they might suddenly think that 4-8 off-suit they’ve got in early position is worth a raise. I suppose what I’m saying is if I found myself at a table with someone who’s under the influence and throwing their chips away because of it, I don’t know that I’d be honest enough to speak up about it…
Itīs the worst thing you can do if you want to win at poker , all your strategy could go to the garbage can . Definitively if ypu want to be a good poker player donīt drink at the tables .
Earlier this year during the 2007 Ladies Championship Event, I had the unfortunate luck to be moved next to a woman who had just been disciplined for “excessive celebration.” Actually, this woman was totally drunk. I repeatedly complained and called the floor. Nevertheless, this woman was permitted to leave the tournament area and return with large cups of wine. She was obnxious and repeatedly disrupted the table with her mouth and her actions. She knocked crushed candy into my chips and continued to touch me, hug me and kick me with her legs. For a time, Marsha Waggoner was seated to my left. No one seemed to know what to do. During the play of a hand, she would push in all her chips when anyone raised. It was a nightmare. I paid $1,000 to spend the day with a drunk. I made the final table last year in this event and couldn’t get pass dinner in this environment. I make a complaint to the WSOP and have yet to get action. I was interviewed by two suits but no response. As an attorney, I think there may be a cause of action against the WSOP. No one should be allowed to enter your space during this event. Shame on the WSOP for disregarding by requests to be moved and failure to respond to my complaints afte the event.

i dont mean to discredit the truth cause i was not there however everyone is saying that drunks throw the money away yet scotty was able to beat world class “athletes” (sorry i love poker arguments) any chance it was a front to play the players? after all he hit a big one in that tourney would you CALL a drunk guy? congrats scotty on the wolf clothing
If people want to get lashed and donk off all their chips to me, I’m cool with that. Loud, obnoxious drunks at your table are a blessing, not a hindrance. Just sit tight and spank them with a monster when they over-play their K-T, all the while reassuring them of how well they’re playing.
Remember, don’t rattle the aquarium!
That is where I make most of my money from
How else am I going to get paid out when I hit a good hand.
Gotta agree with those that like drunk people at their table. I am not a very good poker player, and if it were not for drunks, I would not win at all
