World Series of Poker Main Event Underway

The first 3 'day ones' of the $10,000 buy-in no-limit Texas Hold'em Main Event have taken place at the 2008 World Series of Poker, and so far 4,383 have joined the tournament, with one final 'day one' left to play today. Of the 4,383, about half have been eliminated, with 2,277 surviving to day two, including former main event champs Brad Daugherty, Chris Moneymaker, Joe Hachem, Scotty Nguyen and Robert Varkonyi. Of the celebs in the field, so far only Ray Romano has made it to Day 2.

Some of the other notable players who've made it to day 2 include: David Singer, Brad Booth, Evelyn Ng, Nenad Medic, Jeff Madsen, Clonie Gowen, Isabelle Mercier, Liz Lieu, Mike Matusow, Minh Nguyen, Bill Chen, Sammy Farha, Rhett Butler, Burt Boutin, Mike Wattel, John Juanda, Mel Judah, Robert Mizrachi, Erick Lindgren, Thor Hansen, Barney Boatman, Hoyt Corkins, Erick Seidel, Patrik Antonius, "Captain" Tom Franklin, Kathy Liebert, Bill Edler, Mickey Appleman, Steve Zolotow, Mark Vos, Chau Giang, Hasan Habib, Blair Hinkle, Bill Baxter, and Ted Lawson.

Glad they have more players than last year. Why is the top prize money down from two years ago? Did they restructure the payouts?

I predict that Gus Hansen will win his first WSOP bracelet at the main event this year…
