World Series of Poker Ladies Event
Monday July 10, 2006
Yesterday, the Ladies event at the World Series of Poker got underway at an earlier-than-usual time of 11 am, with me among the record 1,128 entrants. It was something else to sit in my first World Series Event, with players like pros Cyndy Violette, Susie Isaac, and Kathy Liebert, last year's winner Jennifer Tilly, and celeb-poker players like Mimi Rodgers and Shannon Elizabeth. Luckily for me, though it would have been fun, none of them were seated at my table. We were lucky and started with $1,500 chips for our $1,000 buy-in, which was great news, as usually chips = entry fee exactly at the World Series, so I felt like I had started with a big bonus right away. As the final 26 just shuffled up and dealt over in the other room, you can guess that I'm not among them, but I had a great time and a great day overall. I made it to around 225, right before the dinner break, after pocket jacks got beat twice in a row, first by big slick (AK) and then by Ace-jack. I feel like I played some of my best poker ever, watching for tells, using my stack and position when I could, and most important when in a field of this size, I was patient and didn't get desperate. Playing in a field this size though really does show the importance of getting lucky at the right time, and in the end, I wasn't, but I don't feel bad about it. In fact, it just makes me want to play more.
