Kid Beats Brat
Friday July 7, 2006
While it looked very, very promising for Phil "the poker brat" Hellmuth to capture his 10th World Series of Poker bracelet last night, it was not to be. When the players were down to the final two, it looked like everything was in Hellmuth's favor, a seasoned veteran, against an (before) unknown player, Jeff Cabanillas, a 22-year-old guy playing in his first live Texas Hold'em tournament. The fans and friends of Hellmuth packed in to watch, though for some reason ESPN’s decided not to have a full production crew cover the action. I still hope we get to see how the young Cabanillas held his own to win a Chris Moneymaker-reminiscent victory over one of poker's most well-known and skilled pros. Read more about the event at Cardplayer.com.
Today, the seven-card stud tournament final table will begin playing, and there are quite a few notables sitting around the table, including Johnny Chan, Miami John Cernuto, and David Williams.
They'll also be continuing Event #11, the $1,500 Limit Hold'em event, and Event #12, $5,000 Omaha Hi/lo Eight today, and by tomorrow, I will be there in Vegas, ready to storm up the Las Vegas Poker rooms and bring you coverage from the poker front.
