Creator of Tournament of Champions Idea Wins It
Tuesday June 27, 2006
The 2006 Tournament of Champions finished up in the wee hours of today, and the winner was World Poker Tour host Mike Sexton, who came up with the idea for such a tournament 8 years ago. Cooincidence? Probably. Last year's winner, Mike Matusow, got knocked out in 3rd place and left in classic style, saying "Maybe its good I didn’t win this. Cause if I did I might not have shown up for the rest of the World Series.” After his departure, it was down to Sexton and Daniel Negreanu, who played heads-up for over 6 hours. Negreanu was finally defeated by pocket aces, the best starting hand in Hold'em -- not a bad way to go. Besides, Negreanu still got $375,000 for his work, and Mike Sexton said he was planning on giving half of the million dollar first prize to charity.
