Talking the Poker Talk

When I watch or teach poker, I'm always reminded how poker players love their slang -- my personal favorites are "the nuts" and "muck" for some reason -- but if you're not familiar with poker jargon, it can all sound like Greek to you. Luckily, it's not hard to get up to speed and sound like a seasoned pro. Two good ways to start learning table talk are to read over the common slang terms for starting hands in Texas Hold'em and commonly used poker acronyms. For individual terms like "suckout" and "laydown," visit the poker glossary -- and if there's a term you've heard, don't see, and want to know, e-mail me and I'll make sure and add it.

Keep in mind that when playing in an online poker room, or in a brick-and-mortar room, knowing the lingo is very important… Experienced players will know they can bully you around if you can’t even understand what they’re talking about…
