Poker and Charity
Thursday July 14, 2005
There's a lot of money changing hands in the World Series of Poker, and around poker games in general. After all, poker is a game in which money is the means of keeping score, and there are a lot of games going on around the world, both in real life and online. But this is not to say poker players are a money-hungry, cold bunch. In fact, many of the poker players I've met are the most generous, kind people I've ever known. And many poker players are involved with charities.
Case in point: Though I've never met him, Barry Greenstein is known for good reason as "the Robin Hood of Poker."
This Fox Sports Article talks about Greenstein dedicating his WSOP Bracelet to a poker player, Charlie Tuttle, who recently passed away. According to Felicia Lee, one of my fave girl poker bloggers, Greenstein sent a copy of his new book to Tuttle's family with the inscription, "This is the first book off the press. It was promised to Charlie Tuttle, the poker blogger who inspired me to win a World Series of Poker tournament." That's pretty sweet.
To continue the goodwill, the poker bloggers have arranged a charity tournament at the online poker site PokerStars this Sunday. It's a $20 Buy-in tournament, with all the proceeds going to charity (the Vanderbilt University Cancer Clinic, to be precise). I'll be there. Details:
Where: PokerStars
When: Sunday, July 17th, 6:00 PM ET
Name: WPBT "Charlie" Tournament (#9680072)
Game: No Limit Hold'Em
Buy-in: $20
Once on PokerStars, look under the Private Tournament tab to find it. Based on the fun I've had playing with the poker bloggers in the past, $20 is a bargain just for the entertainment value. I hope you'll join us.
